A profile with a photo gets far more replies than one without, and you do not need to be a movie star. All it takes is some daylight and someone happy to press the button. Here are five easy tips.
Nothing beats a genuine smile. Think of something that makes you laugh, perhaps the year your team won the flag, or the grandkids trying to explain what a hashtag is, and let it shine through. A smile says you are friendly and good company.
Natural light is far kinder than the kitchen downlights. Sit in the shade on the verandah or by a window, away from the harsh midday sun. Pop on your good shirt or blouse, and add a second photo of you doing something you enjoy, in the garden, at the bowls club or with the dog.
Dating sites crop photos to fit, so keep your face near the middle with a little room around it. Ask your helper to hold the phone at your eye level, not looking down on you, and check it is in focus. A head and shoulders shot works best as your main picture.
The family Christmas photo may be a favourite, but with a dozen relatives in it nobody will know which one is you. Pick photos of you on your own, and keep pictures of a late spouse or former partner for the family album.
Use photos taken in the last year or so. Your date will be looking for the person in the picture when you walk into the cafe, so a recent photo saves any surprises. Ask a son, daughter or grandkid to take a few snaps and choose the best two or three.
