Remember meeting people at the Saturday night dance, or being introduced by a well meaning aunt at a christening? These days an online profile does the introducing for you, and you can write it in your own time, at your own pace, with a cuppa beside you.
Plenty of us go blank when asked to describe ourselves. The trick is to pretend you are yarning with someone new at the club and simply tell a few stories.
Where did you grow up, and where has life taken you? What did you do for work, and what keeps you busy now? Lawn bowls, the footy on the radio, the crossword, a caravan trip up the coast? Kids, grandkids, maybe even great grandkids? A dog or a galah that rules the roost? Little details like these give people something to write back about.
A couple of subjects are best saved for later. Long stories about a past marriage can make a reader wonder whether you are ready for someone new, so a line or two is plenty. And politics is best left out altogether.
Stuck for words? Write about what you would love to share with someone. A Sunday drive, a matinee, a counter meal at the pub or simply someone to watch the sunset with from the verandah. Using "we" and "us" now and then helps a reader picture themselves right there with you.
Above all, be honest, be cheerful and be yourself. The right person will like you just the way you are.
